Chagford 1 - 5 Bovey Tracey

Chagford looked as though they had a hang-over from their Herald Cup semi-final of last week. Leaders Bovey Tracey played simple tactics in making a couple of short passes and then sending the ball forward. On more than one occasion Chagford were caught out by the tactic but had Williams and Scarry to thank at times.
As it was, Bovey were to score three in the first half in setting an uncatchable lead. Dan Johnston for Chagford clattered his opponent to gift Bovey an 11th minute penalty. Simon Revell converted comfortably and, to add to the hosts’ woes Johnston hobbled off to be replaced by Hutchison. Revell doubled his tally within ten minutes and Chagford looked down and out when Mark Sneap scored a third soon after. But Christian Crowther-Smith curled in a sweet reply just before the break, giving Chagford hope of a comeback.
The second half was a little more finely balanced though neither side could make the most of what chances they had. Davis and Whatley had the home team’s best opportunities while Chris Ralph forced his own ‘keeper into a superb reflex save, from a wicked deflection. Fifteen minutes from the end, Bovey were given a puzzling penalty award and Revell duly notched his hat-trick. Five minutes later, Lee Pascoe sealed a fine Bovey win that keeps them at the top of the table. l This week, Chagford travel to Kingsteignton with the need to get back to their early season form.

Chagford 7 -3 Staverton (AET)

Quarter final of the Herald Cup.

Both teams started the match as if it was the final itself with Chagford coming out on top in the early exchanges.
Staverton opened the scoring but this was cancelled out by Whatley’s instinctive left-foot finish for Chagford.
Defensive and goalkeeping errors accounted for the next goal for Staverton who finished the first half the stronger of the two teams.
The start of the second half saw Chagford in a more determined mood, and after a good spell of inter-play, Davis put the ball into the Staverton net to equalise for Chagford.
A good hard battle ensued for much of the second half and “Nipper” Crowther-Smith put Chagford into the lead with ten minutes of the match to go. This is the way it stayed until the last minute of the game where a massive defensive error gave Staverton a late equaliser, forcing extra time in the gloom of a December afternoon.
The first half of extra time kicked off and Chagford went on the attack. Within 5 minutes a well worked move down the right hand side saw Potter cross for substitute Mortimore to slot into the back of the net. Shortly after the restart a scuffle in the middle of the park saw one player from each side dismissed.
Chagford were soon to go 5-3 up when Potter notched after another good run down the right.
In the second half of extra time and with the light fading, Nipper got his second of the game and brother Robin also got on the score sheet after some neat passing. The final score, Chagford 7 – 3 Staverton, put the home side through to their first ever semi-final of the Herald Cup.
